It’s OK to use unknown artists

At various levels of Arts Award, young people explore artists’ work and research their careers. Here’s a quick reminder of what we mean when we talk about ‘artists’. We include crafts people, makers and everyone else who creates art works – you don’t even need to know their name!

The key to this is thinking how children and young people’s research develops art form knowledge and understanding: what materials, tools and skills did/does the artist need? Why did/do they use these materials and how would they have trained? Where did they get their inspiration?

Not every artist in history has had their name passed down through time, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy of being celebrated now! From Ancient Egyptians who painted mummy cases, furniture designers and makers, to the people who make costumes, creators of graffiti murals and sculptors, artists from history to those working today are all artists whose work can be researched for Arts Award.

New – Arts Award webinars

We are pleased to announce that this year we are beginning to offer support webinars for Arts Award advisers and centres. Take a look at what’s coming up, find a time to suit you in our timetable of events, and get your areas of interest booked in as soon as possible.

There is still time to book for Make your own logbooks on 10 July. There is a range of other webinars to attend before the end of term, as well as into the autumn, so there’s bound to be a time and topic to suit your needs.

If you prefer face-to-face support, you can attend one of our support surgeries or request a support visit if you meet our criteria.
