How Arts Award Discover can support Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Visual Art

Recognition for visual art learning

Arts Award Discover supports the national curriculum by providing you with a useful framework for Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) visual art teaching.

Running Discover can help primary school classes explore art, craft and design activities in a structured manner. Creative activities that work with Discover are endless but could include drawing, textiles, jewellery making, collage and pottery.

How Arts Award Discover provides a framework for the primary art curriculum

Arts Award Discover encourages children to observe and record different visual art forms, as well as getting involved themselves. This helps them develop their observational skills and the appreciation that art is all around us. Upon completion, children receive a certificate to be proud of.

Discover feeds creativity and individuality, encouraging children to explore different artists and express themselves through art. Self reflection is encouraged and activities allow children to pursue their own personal learning journey.

‘From the moment I heard about Arts Award I knew it was the way arts should be taught. Being involved in Arts Award has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my teaching career.’

Christine Pearson, Art Design & Technology teacher, Thomas Estley Community College

KS1 and KS2 art activity ideas that work with Discover

Arts Award Discover can be used to compliment the national KS1 and KS2  curriculum objectives for Art and gain recognition for this learning. Discover can encompass visual art activities such as:

  • Using a range of materials. Discover encourages experimentation with different media to make artwork both in and out of the classroom.
  • Development of technique. Discover can be used to encourage children to explore and record a range of art and design techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
  • Explore artists and their work. As part of working towards Discover, students are encouraged to learn about a range of artists, craft makers and designers.
  • Develop and share ideas. Whether in lessons or clubs, Discover works with many art forms including model making, sculpting and yarn bombing.
  • Cross curricular connections. Discover can be used to make links with other arts subjects such as Drama, Design Technology and Animation, as well as more widely, for example with Science, Coding or History.
